In the last few months, some camera traps have been placed in Ventotene to monitor the presence (or preferably the absence) of rats. Clearly the camera traps have captured many other animals living on the island. Today the protagonist is a Serin Serinus serinus one of the smallest passeriforms living in Italy. As the very powerful beak shows this species is essentially granivorous. The nest usually is built between the branches of a tree or a bush and is cup-shaped with the outer part formed by twigs and the inside lined with feathers and down.
Our camera trap has catched the frenetic activity of this serin looking for material for the construction of its nest. So frenetic that... have you ever seen a bird take a tumble?
