Today is the World Day of Migratory Birds and we celebrate it by showing once again some pictures of the species for the protection of which in the Pontine Islands we have been working for some years: the Scopoli's shearwater Calonectris diomedea and the Yelkouan shearwater Puffinus yelkouan.
On this particular day, we want to remember the migratory journeys that these two species make throughout the year. The Yealkouan shearwater makes its migrations between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea without ever crossing the Strait of Gibraltar. The Scopoli's shearwater has its wintering areas in the Atlantic Ocean and returns to the Mediterranean for nesting. We celebrate these extraordinary seabirds and their travels by posting images of them doing what they do at best: flying!
